Marilyn Henning and her husband, Lee, started singing with the Master Singers of Milwaukee when the group was originally formed in 1973.

She served as personnel director under Marlys Greinke and in the same capacity for 15 years with Margaret Hawkins in her small ensemble, Vocal Arts Consort.  She served as secretary for the MSM Board until 2013.  Marilyn continues to serve on the MSM Board as a member-at-large, and to sing with the group.  She also plays flute in a flute ensemble, sings in church choir, and sings in the Elm Grove Women’s Choir.

Marilyn  graduated from Marquette University in 1974 in nursing with a minor in music in, and worked as a surgical and ER nurse.  She began teaching nursing in 1981 and taught at Alverno, UW-Milwaukee,  and Marquette University.  Marilyn earned her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Marquette University in 1985, worked as a Clinical Specialist, and then taught nursing at MATC for 24 years.  She retired from teaching in 2013.

Marilyn and Lee have four married children and 16 grandchildren. The Hennings  live in Elm Grove, Wisconsin.

Carol Thiel has sung with the MSM since 2013 and she accepted the new Board position of Corresponding Secretary in 2020. After graduating from UW-Whitewater with a degree in Vocal Performance,  she had the opportunity to sing with Milwaukee’s Florentine Opera for 23 seasons.

Until three years ago, Carol had worked for 30 years in Human Resources/Benefits with a private company. Since then she has served as an HR Director with a public entity.  Married to Bob Thiel for 34 years, they have two sons, one married, and one grandson. Carol lives in Mt Pleasant, WI.

The MSM is fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated individual on our board and in our choir, especially since she has commuted to Wauwatosa for rehearsal for the last seven years! Welcome, Carol Thiel!

Sandra Halgerson was invited to join the MSM Board in 2017, as a Member-at-Large, and was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the Board as Recording Secretary in 2020. She has studied both in the U.S. and abroad, and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from UW-Whitewater. While not a trained musician (she is not a singing member of the MSM), Sandra has enjoyed a life-long love of music, thanks to her father, an amateur musician, composer, and lyricist. She spent 43 years working as a financial professional in the metro Milwaukee area. Sandra is now retired and lives in the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee, WI.

Congratulations to Sandra Halgerson on her new role as Recording Secretary, and we thank her for her many years of service to the MSM.

2020 has been a strange and unusual year for all. It has been especially hard for our MSM members as we cannot gather to present full, live, in-person concerts for you as we have in the past. Fortunately, we were able to find a way to gather safely and responsibly to record a live 4-song, 18-minute Christmas performance, “A Master Singers Christmas 2020.”
